Remember Who You Are

by robinz

As the world watches the events unfolding in Japan one cannot help but notice the incredible dignity, grace and composure of the Japanese people.  There are no angry people yelling at the aid workers due to lack of supplies, there has been no looting.  They stand in line and stay calm even when the water or the food they were waiting for runs out.  Amazing.  None of us would blame them for showing frustration, come on.. we rather expect it, but, they remain true to themselves and who they are.

Remember who you are.  Whenever my children have an issue they are dealing with, big or small, I always tell them to remember who they are.  Remember where you come from and what is expected of you.  Seemingly tough love for kids who lost a sister at 8 and 9 years of age.  (My daughter Aly was 9 my son Tanner at 8. ) It would have been easy that first year of grief for them not to try, to not be kind, to not do their very best, to yell, to behave badly, after all life had dealt them a horrible blow.  But, I reminded them frequently to remember who you are.

There are people in Japan who remember when we dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  They remember watching people they loved suffer from the radiation poisoning,… they remember.  It’s unfair they have to go through a catastrophic event twice in their lifetime but, they remember who they are and go on with dignity, grace and composure.  They say they will start from scratch and build an even better Japan, again.

10 years ago today I lost a little girl, her name was Isabella, she was 5 and 1/4 to the day.  Life does that.  Life brings us tsunamis, earthquakes and nuclear fall out.  Sometimes, life brings us death too soon.  But, like the Japanese people, and my children who embody the phrase, Remember who you are, I hope you will too.  No matter what life brings you,  always  remember who you are.
